Respect Our Liver, the Warrior of Health and Detoxification

Functional Nutritionist Kiiran Patel shares the secrets to keep our liver young and functional, and to  take care of overall health

The liver is our body’s warrior, with an incredible ability to protect and defend us. It plays a crucial role in metabolism, immunity, digestion, emotion, detoxification, and vitamin storage. Keeping the liver young and functional is essential for our overall health.

The liver gives us emotional wings to fly while keeping us grounded. It helps produce the right cholesterol, which is essential for cell structure, and aids in hormone production, the chemical messengers of our body. A sluggish and fatty liver is a sign of degrading health and is the first organ we start healing to reset our system.

Every day, our bodies are exposed to harmful chemicals and environmental toxins. The kidneys, liver, large intestine, sweat glands, and lymphatic system work together to reduce this buildup. However, the liver plays a crucial role in detoxifying, absorbing nutrients, hormones, and removing waste.

The liver helps break down and eliminate:

– Chemicals and pollutants

– Medications (both prescription and over-the-counter)

– Food additives, colorings, flavor enhancers, preservatives, artificial sweeteners

– Alcohol

– Volatile organic compounds from fragrances and air fresheners among others.

This constant load makes our liver sluggish. There are two phases of liver detoxification:

1. Phase 1: Enzymes like cytochrome P450 neutralize the toxins.

2. Phase 2: The neutralized toxins are transformed and eliminated.

Traditional fasting methods periodically aided in liver detoxification, even when the chemical load was lesser. Today, we fast in more convenient ways with specific plans. Functional nutrition uses diets to support the liver detoxification processes. We need to fuel up with nutrients to open the detox pathways. Specific meal plans are required to support both phases of liver detoxification.

If the liver is not detoxified regularly, it can lead to a build-up of toxins, causing a variety of health issues. These include fatigue, brain fog, hormonal imbalances, digestive problems, and even liver disease. Over time, a toxic liver can lead to serious conditions such as cirrhosis, liver failure, and increased risk of liver cancer. Therefore, supporting liver health through proper nutrition, hydration, and lifestyle choices is crucial for maintaining overall health and preventing disease.
