i) Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting systems, networks, and programs from digital attacks. These cyberattacks are usually aimed at accessing, changing, or destroying sensitive information; extorting money from users through ransomware; or interrupting normal business processes.

ii) Cyberviolence:The use of computer systems to cause, facilitate, or threaten violence against individuals, that results in (or is likely to result in) physical, sexual, psychological or economic harm or suffering and may include the exploitation of the individual’s circumstance, characteristics or vulnerabilities.”.

Cyber Crime Wing, West Bengal has been created by State Government to supervise all Cyber Crime and Cyber Security related matters in the State of West Bengal. Cyber Crime is increasing exponentially and we are getting large number of complaints daily on our cyber crime helpline 1930/112. Since, the cyber criminals are highly organised and operating from other States and Countries, their identification is a time consuming process. In such situation all of you are advised to be careful about cyber criminals while investing in any financial instruments, mobile towers, cryptocurrencies and making any financial transaction. Any financial proposal sound too good to be true is best avoided. Citizens are also advised to be careful about misuse of their personal documents, bank account and social media handles by cyber criminals.

India’s cybersecurity efforts have advanced significantly, and the country is now considered a “role model” in the Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI). The GCI is published by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and assesses countries based on legal, technical, organizational, and other factors. In 2024, India scored 98.49 out of 100, ranking it in Tier 1 along with the US, Japan, and Australia.

Be mindful of what they share on social media, including video chats. 

Be careful when accepting chat requests from strangers. 

Report suspicious identifiers to the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP).
